The final Web 2.0 Tool I researched was one where you can host your presentations and then share them with other people. It's called Slideshare. I found this tool on "The Top 100 Tools for Learning". I wanted to be diverse in my selection of tools this week and so I thought that this tool was a good choice as it provides a means for both myself and for my students to share information. Slideshare is free to use and is highly rated. I would first implement Slideshare in my classroom by creating a few presentations so that my students could see how the presentations look and they could become accustomed to the tool, then I would ask them how they like the look of the presentation. I use powerpoint for my warm ups and some content already and my students are already familiar with the use of the technology. I would then assign the tool as a team collaboration project with rubrics with a given topic as a presentation of their choice. Last week, I chose a similar Web 2.0 tool which incorporated voice narration. The only difference with this tool, is that this tool is actually compatible with Facebook and Twitter! It is also compatible with Microsoft. The only thing I will have to make sure of is that it is fully accessible on my district's network. I did not run into any problems with Slidestory. The only constraint at this time, is the same one: time and the push to teach science content. Finally, what I like most about Slideshare is that you can create a multitude of presentations not just for education, but for business, finance, and humor. Slideshare can be used by anybody wanting to present any type of content or material.

Hi Yesenia,
I read through your posting on slide share and find it illuminating. I did stumble on slide share and find their presentations useful. You drag and post to the board and tell your story. I will use it to teach Digital story telling as it helpful. i am glad you brought it up Thanks.

Would Words?
Would Words become Could Words when we do what we Should with... Words!

Would Words become Building Blocks to create an empire if we took the time to chisel and sculpt them?
Would Words become Pedestals to promote family and friends if we wrote and spoke them with thought and effort?
Would Words become Catalysts of change if we placed them in the right situation with the right person?
Would Words become Could Words when we do what we Should with
Words!

Hi Vandy, I love you use of visuals to punctuate your blog. I feel that this pictures you so perfectly. Your words helped not only in helping us complete our last team project but also gave great encouragement in times when we got bogged down in the details. Your words have also helped to cultivate some great friendships over line. Here is one of them. Thank you for this blog it is great. Mark West

Hi Vandi,
I just love this poem you posted because I find it meaningful and realistic to life.Words really are the building blocks of life and compels us to be thoughtful about what we say.Teachers build lives of their students with words; how appropriate.
Did compose the poem yourself or a from which selection? I would like to know.

4 BP4_2009121_Tool#1(Kidyos and Games Classroom)
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my instructor, Rena Hanaway for this assignment. For if it wasn’t for this assignment, I would not have come across these wonderful web 2.0 sites for children. As a Kindergarten teacher, I am always on the lookout for wholesome and safe websites to use with my students. I love technology in the classroom but with so much junk out there, it can become hard to find fun and educational online games and videos for this very young age group. I loved the Kidyos site because it has been screened and certified safe. As I explored the site, I immediately added it to my list of site to make available to both my students and my 4 year old daughter. I have already signed her up for it. I will use the site during literacy workstation as one of my computer approved sites for the kids to visit. I also explored the Games Classroom website. I liked the site as well and will use it again for both my students and my daughter. The games on this site are very educational. There are estimating and comparison games, both are some of the objectives we teach in math. I can do a lot with these sites. I am so excited and I know my children will love watching the videos and playing the games on these sites.
These are truly great web destinations for accessing high-quality educational videos and games for children.

BP8-2009-122#3 Webinars: More of web 2.0 tools

More Web 2.0 Tools.
Webinars from such like Elluminate; Classtools from classtools.net are tools that are great for e learning. However podcasts will be more applicable to my workplace.
A podcast is a series of digital media files, usually either digital audio or video, that is made available for download via web syndication, according wikipedia. pod catchers download from the internet any new files they wish.
Use of podcast for education will encompass getting educational materials from the web which students can download offline and listen to or watch.
It could be used too give instruction, and in depth analysis of a subject or topics of interest.
However it does not have the advantage of immediate response as it will be with blogging or webinars as when questions or suggestions could be typed in a chat box during webinars.
i might say the digital story telling recorded and broadcast through education network will be most appropriate since connection to an internet is strictly forbidden of prison inmates. So one way communication systems will do for such students and learners.
The websites below will of help for these tools.

BP2-2009122 #2 Discovering web 2.0 tools

Two Wen 2.0 Media
Digital Story telling is media I find interesting and useful in my environment. It is the practice of using computer generated tools and images coupled with sound to tell stories. Textual and audio recorded narration are included.
Like any story it will have a point of view. It could be personal stories of life events actual or imagined or historically reconstructed event. Any body, anywhere and at any time can tell stories that touch the heart
A practical use of this tool is an example from University of Houston website on Educational Uses of Digital Story telling where Lee, H (1960) To Kill a Mockingbird , a novel that examines and focuses attention on the issue of prejudice and racism in America is used; the novel was so a successful novel in exposing prejudice in America that banning it became an issue in Oklahoma as shown in the website , Educational Uses of Digital story Telling.
I will use this medium to help my students research and relate to others the cultural milieu in which novels were written, make such characters in the novels come alive through images and pictures and music and narration. This could be done collaboratively to encourage participation and pooled intelligences
In the words of Dominic Ouellet-Tremblay, a fifth-grade student at St-Joseph Institute in Quebec City,Canada: “Blogs give us a chance to communicate between us and motivate us to write... Blogging is an opportunity to exchange our point of view with the rest of the world not just people in our immediate environment” Downes(2009) The student goes on to tell how comments and feedback make them know what weakness they have and strive to improve on it. There in a nut shell and much more are what I hope to accomplish by using blogs in the classroom.
I will select topics of interest on a book we are studying and ask students to say their minds on it. With the rubrics for blog writing made clear to them, students will be forced to learn to read and write and learn from others. They will be in touch with the whole wide world.

Tell A story in 5 Frames
About Tell a story in 5 frames (Visual story telling)
Telling a story in 5 frames is a visual form of a two part story telling where five frames or photographs are posted and are open for discussion or interpretation. “The first part is creating and telling a story through visual means with only a title to help guide the interpretation. The second part is the response of the group to the visual story. The group response can take many forms such as, a poetic or prose rendering of the visualization, a critique on the structure of the story, comments on the photograph, or other constructive forms of response. Telling and enjoying stories should create entertainment for the group as well as offer insight into the universal elements that help create a story for an international audience. The more people who respond , as either story tellers or respondents, the greater the reward for all.”
The rules for the game are as follows: 1. Submit a sequence of up to five photographs that create a story. 2. Do not post photos in the group pool. The best story of the month will be featured in the group pool. 3. Choose any subject, but the entire sequence should visually tell a story. 4. A title is the only words that can be used. Rely on the photographs to bring the story to life 5. Group members respond by relating in their own words the story that they see, or critique the story and/or photographs and open the story up to discussion. following this example is easy as evry one has photographs that could be used to create a story.
I find this kind interesting and challenging because of the endless possibilities it could be put to use. Apart from digital story telling, I find it applicable in creative writing like say a poem. in such an exercise each photograph could form the stanza of a poem or be a source of inspiration to write. this is fun and really exciting.
In my work situation this is especially useful as I could paste such photographs on a board and challenge my students to tell the story behinds the photos or interpret the story behind the pictures. i simply love this.

Sample Poems to Read and Be Inspired
Today at the Bluebird Cafe
It's all-you-can-eat at the Bluebird Café, A grasshopper-katydid-cricket buffet, with berries and snails and a bluebottle fly, a sip of the lake and a bite of the sky.

I wondered lonely as a cloud Walking about so proud. The sun kissed my face And the world was filled with grace For love, love was abound.
How do I love thee? Let me
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways I love you 1 because Of your desire to learn. I love you 2 because You continue to try it until you get it. I love you 3 because Of the vitality you bring to our class. I love you 4 because You continue to bloom and grow. I love you 5 because You are always willing to help a classmate. I love you completely just because you are you!
Guidelines to follow in writing your poem
Browse through these first lines of famous poems.
When you have found one that inspires you, continue writing your own poem based on the first line.
Once you have finished your poem, post it in the comments section below. Link the NYPL blog to your Facebook page, and share with your friends!
Be sure to check back on April 30th to see what other New Yorkers have written – as well as the original poems.
And don’t forget to print out a copy of your poem and tuck it in to your pockets, so you can be ready for April 30th
This is a lesson plan to teach creative writing, and specially, poems. i find it interesting and inspiring.
I chose these poems because they give a learner an inspiration from a common practice found in America, Hometown buffet, that offer all-you-can-eat places. The love poem is one that young people will be interested in more that adults.

BP3-2009121- Educational Uses of Blogs

Blogs use in education
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary a blog is a website :
‘that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer; also : the contents of such a site.’
Blogs get a learner connected to friends, relations, classmates and teachers . It spurs one to think and reflect on life’s experiences, and helps to develop writing skills and abilities.
Reading other people’s blogs gives one ideas or sharpens thoughts. It also provides opportunities for diverse perspectives on a topic. Blogs increase students’ interest and ownership in learning and becomes a legitimate chance to participate in learning
Blogs can be used to encourage collaboration among students, teachers and parents for the development of the child.
As a follow up on the lesson on comparing two poems : Frost’s ‘The Road Not Taken’ and Piercy’s ‘To be of use;’ I would ask students to post reflections to experiences and decisions they have had in the past week/month where they reflected or made decision that would affect their life in the future. Decisions on their future career choices, areas of study to devote more time and effort, life partners and girl friends or boy friends as the case maybe, making clear the areas of conflict they faced. Note: conflict comes in when there at least two possible paths to go and one weighs the merits or risks of one over the other.

BP6-2009121- Anti Teaching:What would Work for Education in America?

What Would Work for Education in America?
Wesch, M (1981) thesis seems be the failure to educate all because teachers have cast a single mold for education and expects everybody to fit into it: whether at the elementary, secondary, college and university level. Students hardly find significance in learning As such teachers, in the opinion of the writer, are the ‘hindrance to learning.’
Quoting Postman and Weingartner(1971), the author seemed to have found a solution to the anti teaching: that the learning environment(‘medlium) is more important to learning itself, and stresses management of the environment rather than ‘simply conveying information.’ He finally posits Simulation as a means of recreating the real world learning environment most conducive to learning.
Much as I agree with him for need of significance in learning and the need to use diverse methods and instructional techniques to reach them yet I know that technologies and methods do not impart knowledge or create significance. Simulation is effective in conveying information in practice but there is no simulation that can equate an actual experience itself. not just experience but, the insight into life and understanding that come from reflection. For example no amount of simulation or re creating a famine experience of children dying of malnutrition can compensate for one day of hunger and a hopelessness that food may not even come at all. Or the simulation about a war situation where an unexpected ambush with grenades lead to death.this can be simulated to no end but it will never be a match fro the actual experience in Iraq or Aghfanistan.
The problem of meaning and significance in education should be understood in two phases from my readings of Perkins, D. and Blythe, T. (2009) (TfU). The first phase has to do with acquiring information or knowledge, whether from books or experiences or from a teacher. The first phase is where most teachings have been focused. It does seem to me that this phase is affected by age and maturation, according to Jean Piaget. Kids in the kindergarten and elementary schools do not have sufficient reflective abilities( conservation) as Piaget would call it as their maturational age may be different from their biological age. However TfU calls for that extra work that helps learners create understanding and the consequent significance for them. This second phase is contingent on reflection on the experiences acquired or knowledge ingested from books and role models. And my submission is that it takes learners of certain maturational abilities to reflect on knowledge and experiences in other for such learners to profit from learning. And what is true of an individual by extrapolation is also true of a society.
Of great importance to attain understanding and significance will be deploying the knowledge one has acquired in the classes taken so for. Admitting the theories of Gardner, H (2009), Multiple Intelligences as a way of using various means to reach our diverse learners as well as Jensen, E (2008) Brain Based learning it is now possible to reach many students who will otherwise be labeled as ‘not cut for learning.’
PLE holds a great potential for the future of education according to Educause. However I consider the maturational level of learners as a key component for its success as applicable among college and university students or talented one in the high school levels.
